Correct use of blood glucose monitoring equipment is crucial in obtaining accurate results. As therapeutic decisions are made based on the results you obtain on a blood glucose meter it is important that you follow and implement best practice. In this module you will learn;

• how to use the FreeStyle Optium H blood glucose monitoring system,
• the correct procedure for collection and transfer of blood to the test strip,
• the process of calibration
• and some of the screen messages you may encounter and what they mean.

b) How to use the FreeStyle Optium H – Blood Ketone Testing

Blood ketone testing is an important test to assess the level of insulin deficiency particularly in people who have type 1 diabetes. Blood ketone testing is a more direct and accurate way of measuring ketones compared to urine testing and gives you a quantitative result.

Measuring both blood glucose and blood ketones will give you a better picture for early detection and management of ketosis or Diabetic Ketoacidosis, compared to blood glucose testing alone.
